This past June, I was gifted Harry Potter e a Pedra Filosofal and that has since started a collection of books published in Portuguese. Although modest, the editions were added to here and there over several months until I ran out of space on their bookshelf.

Many of them are Brazilian classics that were reprinted by a bookstore in New York City. Using AbeBooks.com to find them, this has not only been good practice for my language skills, I have been enjoying plots that are completely fresh. While production of movies and television shows has been paused due to COVID, these storylines are completely new to me even if they might be old in South America.

Out of curiosity, I have bought an Aurélio dictionary, a copy of Raízes do Brasil, and Spilt Milk- an English translation of Leite Derramado. Although wildly different writings, they have an unusual connection: Chico Buarque who wrote Spilt Milk is the son of Sérgio Buarque who wrote Raízes do Brasil. In turn, Sérgio Buarque was the son of Aurélio Buarque who wrote the dictionary. A very accomplished family to say the least.
