While I have been focused learning Portuguese, I’ve still been trying other languages on DuoLingo. Someone once told me that people who speak Portuguese can understand Spanish but not necessarily vice versa. Although my Portuguese is far from fluent, I am already finding this to be true. The further I advance with Portuguese, I check back in with Spanish and am surprised by how much more I can understand. As a result, I cleared the Spanish language tree on DuoLingo up to its first level today.

My landlady was raised in Bolivia and since she has learned that I’ve been learning Portuguese, she’s started speaking to me in Spanish with the biggest smile whenever we see each other. I appreciate her excitement. At a time when our world has shrunk down to the size of an apartment, it has been good to broaden it with another language.
